So, you’ve decided that you want to create a gift using My Icon Story but want a little help and inspiration to approach the process – there is so much choice! This blog offers a summary of how to create your first My Icon Story as well as offer a couple of tips and tricks for making the best print possible.
A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO CREATE A MY ICON STORY GIFT
STEP 1 SIZE:
Consider how big you want your My Icon Story print to be. Is the giftee a minimalist? If so, a Small & Mighty print may be the perfect size, or maybe they’ve had many memorable experiences and travelled to lots of amazing destinations – our Wallhogger is the biggest of our 3 main sizes. Also, do you think that you can portray your story in 4 icons, or do you need 12 to fully express it? Make sure you save and proceed before moving on to the next step!
STEP 2 BACKGROUND COLOUR:
Think about colour schemes: Who are your creating your print for and do they have a favourite colour? Bold and bright makes a real statement so does it match with their existing interior décor? Whilst it may be tempting to play it safe with colours, don’t forget for My Icon Story also offer premium gradient colours, which are, in my opinion, completely stunning! The background in the image below is my personal favourite, although there is a fab range to pick from.
STEP 3 ICONS:
Here the real fun begins as you search for icons to create your story. With so many possibilities and themes to base your print around we’ve listed some of the most popular:
>The story of your relationship to celebrate your wedding anniversary – also a great option for a 1st year ‘paper’anniversary
>Capture your best travel highlights from a sabbatical, round the world trip or gap year adventures
>A timeline of a relationship (both friendship and romantic work equally well!)
>An iconic representation of yourself or the person you are gifting to, featuring hobbies, interest and achievements
>A sporting challenge such as the 5 Peaks
All of these possible story themes are suitable for a variety of gifting occasions from Christmas, Birthdays and Valentine’s Day to a Moving In pressie, house gift or Anniversary (personal or career).
Once you’ve decided the theme you can choose your icons.
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR ICONS:
There are 3 easy ways to find icons for your My Icon Story print:
1. Typing a description of the icon that you desire into the search bar (e.g. snorkelling)
2. Browse our icon collections categorised by continents as well as popular themes such as sport, hobbies, relationship.
3. With My Icon Story, you have access to exclusive brand collections from: Interrail Planner (icons of famous European landmarks), Transport for London (icons of all London Underground, Overground and DLR stations), Swizzels’ Love Hearts (icons of classic Love Hearts expressions and new Love Hearts Emojis) and the Natural History Museum (icons of the Museum’s most popular dinosaur species). My Icon Story customers can exclusively feature any of these licensed brand icons on a personalised My Icon Story print which is awesome and completely unique!
I particularly like the Interrail Planner exclusive collection, but with the range of icons available, you can find practically find any icon to suit your storyline! To add an icon to your design, simply drag and drop the icon on to your print. It’s as easy as that.
Don’t forget, when selecting these icons, you can also alter the colour to better suit your background. Click on the little cog symbol in the top right corner of each icon.
Bear in mind that with some backgrounds it may be better to use white icons rather than black, so do take advantage of the colour changing options when dragging and dropping your icons.
Moreover, if you can’t find an icon that you desire, you can make use of the free icon request service by clicking on ‘can’t find icon’ and submitting your request. Within 24 hours your icon will be designed and uploaded, and you will receive a notification so that you can get back to work!
ADDITIONAL PERSONALISATION:
Excitingly, you can also add bespoke labels under each icon to highlight what they represent (e.g. Where we first met, London Marathon 2019, Welcome baby Ollie) AND add an overarching print title – ‘Our 10 Years’.
STEP 4 FRAMING:
Select a frame that suits your project. I tend to try to make the frame match the colour of the icons, but also consider what looks best with the overarching colour scheme.
STEP 5 ADD TO CART:
Preview your print before adding to cart and make sure to check things like spelling and order of your icons. The preview generated is just a preview to show you a rough mock-up of your print. Once My Icon Story receive your order, one of the design team will manually compose your My Icon Story print, ensuring every icon is spaced equally, text size looks good and your overall design is nothing less than 100% perfect!
Add to the cart and you’re good to go! Don’t forget that you can always go back and make any changes throughout the process.
