FIONA & CAROLYN, THE HUSTLE HOUSE
In a tweet (280 characters) what do you/your business do?
We help businesses supercharge their performance through their people. Our main focus is on developing leaders and teams, and we also love helping people build strong relationships with each other and with clients.
Did you have a job/career before starting your business?
CAROLYN – I worked in Talent/HR and Learning & Development roles for about 20 years, always in a corporate environment – financial services, fintech and retail. I was a bit of a disruptor! I felt strongly that the more emphasis business leaders placed on their people, the better the business would perform but it sometimes took a bit of convincing.
FIONA – I started my career at PwC but quickly realised a life of auditing accounts wasn’t for me. Upon moving to London from Ireland I then spent the next 9 years working in client relationship management at a Financial Technology company dealing predominately with Investment Banks. Through the years I managed different teams and developed a real passion for people development which has led me to this point
Why did you decide to start your own business?
CAROLYN – I was spending less time doing what I loved and was good at, and the roles I had were crazy busy, so I got pretty burnt out. I knew I needed to change my life significantly and had thought about working for myself for a few years so when Fiona quit her job and suggested doing something together I knew it was right. I’m so grateful for her positivity and persuasive nature!
FIONA – It wasn’t an immediate thing. The company I had worked at changed ownership and direction and I found that I had lost my belief and motivation. I left without another job or any plan. I had just gotten married, unfortunately my Dad was ill at the time and we were about to start major house renovations so I felt I needed time to step back. I assumed I’d just go get another job eventually, but the time out made me revaluate my priorities. I realised I wanted more flexibility and ownership in what I did next and in fact I wanted to build on my passion for people development and pivot my career away from Financial Services. And almost naturally I said to Carolyn, how about we combine our skills and try do something together and after a lot of conversations and glasses of wine – we decided to go for it!
Tell us a bit more about The Hustle House
CAROLYN – We bring a unique blend of experience and skills in people development and client management to deliver engaging, fun and highly practical solutions to help businesses build strong leaders and teams. A lot of what we do is about providing tools and support to help managers and leaders become more confident and capable in creating the conditions for their teams to succeed. So we might do a programme of learning, or we might help with vision and planning to ensure that people have clarity over their work, and lots of other things in between! We started in 2019 with a two-day workshop for a friend’s business and since then we’ve worked with different clients all through our amazing network.
FIONA – Our strap line is “unlocking the best in your business” and for us that means unlocking the potential in their people. The most successful businesses invest in their people and our job is to support their development and give them the skills and confidence to nail their jobs. As Carolyn said, the community of founders has been amazing and we’ve been very fortunate to be able to get clients relatively quickly through the support of our network. Luckily, we have very different skill sets so the division of labour works perfectly and we’ve built the business playing to our strengths.
If you were a recent customer of your business, what would you write in the review?
“The Hustle House team took the time to really understand our needs and then did a brilliant job of delivering a fantastic programme with some excellent practical takeaways. We loved their energy and down to earth style!” – CAROLYN
“Engaging, actionable and thought-provoking work by the Hustle House Team, they’ve definitely shifted our thinking” – FIONA
FINISH THESE SENTENCES…
My business is amazing because…We get to work with so many amazing teams, helping them to discover something new and helpful. We pour our passion and energy into creating wonderful experiences for our clients, and we get to work with our best friend each day!
This time next year…We will be making a difference for lots more clients and building out our offering to include toolkits that businesses can buy. We also want to do a lot more speaking events and get an article or two in print! (CAROLYN)
This time next year…If you’ve ever seen ‘Only Fools and Horses” that line makes me instinctively want to say “this time next year Roddy, we’ll be millionaires”. That’s not why we got into this and for us, hopefully we’ll be connecting and engaging with more clients, helping them grow their people and starting to establish our online presence more effectively. (FIONA)
