On the 2nd March 1969 Concorde made history by flying its first test flight from Toulouse, piloted by André Turcat. Concorde, the world’s first supersonic airliner would reach speeds of up to 1,350mph – more than twice as fast as conventional aircraft – and fly as high as 60,000 feet! An absolute titan of the aviation world.
The longest serving Concorde pilot was Jock Lowe, who said flying the aircraft was “like driving a sports car compared with a normal car”. Concorde famous for its speed and supersonic ‘boom’ attracted many celebrity passengers and regularly welcomed the likes of Joan Collins, Sir Paul McCartney and Diana, Princess of Wales!
In October 2003, Concorde retired its services with British Airways and Air France, blaming a downturn in passenger numbers and rising maintenance costs. Many people have commented that the aviation world has gone backwards since Concorde’s retirement as there have been no new supersonic jets launched.
